How water interacts with modern turf systems
Quality artificial grass uses UV stabilized polyethylene fibers tufted into a perforated backing over a compacted, free draining base. Water passes through the turf and into the base efficiently, so a rinse will not harm fibers, backing, adhesives, or infill when applied correctly.
- Rinsing removes dust, pollen, and fines that dull color.
- It supports odor control for pet areas when paired with enzyme cleaners.
- Light water flow can help settle infill evenly and restore fiber stand up after heavy use.
Smart rinsing routine
How often
Rinse monthly in typical residential settings. Increase to weekly where pets use the area, during high pollen or dust, or after events that leave residue.
How to rinse safely
- Inspect seams and edges. If anything looks lifted, skip pressure there and call your installer.
- Set your hose nozzle to a gentle shower or fan pattern.
- Hold the nozzle at least a foot from the surface and sweep with the lay of the turf, working toward drainage lines.
- Let water move across and through the surface. Avoid creating a pinpoint jet.
- Finish with a light cross brush to stand fibers upright.
What about pressure washers
You can use a pressure washer at a low setting with a wide fan tip and good distance. Keep the wand moving, avoid seams and edges, and test a small area first.
What to avoid
- Concentrated high pressure aimed at seams, edges, or a single spot.
- Harsh solvents or undiluted bleach. Use water and mild soap or approved enzyme cleaners.
- Extended pooling. If puddles linger, address drainage rather than adding more water.
Drainage and base checks
Artificial turf is only as good as its base. A properly graded, compacted aggregate base and perforated backing let water pass through quickly. If you see persistent puddles, clogged drainage, or sediment buildup at the edges, clear debris and consider a professional tune up.
Weather and heavy rain
Normal rain will not damage turf or infill. In very heavy downpours on steep slopes, a small amount of lighter infill can migrate. After storms, give the area a quick brush and top off infill if needed to maintain the specified depth.
Pet cleanup made simple
Liquids flow through the system. A quick rinse after pet use helps keep the surface fresh. For stronger odor control, apply a turf safe enzyme product, then rinse as directed.
Aftercare and quick fixes
- Redistribute any uneven infill with a stiff push broom.
- If edges lift, stop rinsing that area and schedule a repair.
- Top off infill only with the type specified for your installation to maintain performance.
