How turf drainage systems differ

Both systems move water through the turf and into the base below. The difference is the path and capacity.

Perforated backing

  • Water exits through factory-punched holes in the backing.
  • Flow rate depends on hole size, spacing, and how easily water can travel laterally to those holes.
  • Ponding can occur between holes during cloudbursts or on very flat areas.

Fully permeable backing

  • Water passes vertically through the entire backing surface.
  • Less reliance on lateral movement, so water clears faster across wide areas.
  • Better at minimizing surface puddles when rain intensity spikes.

What actually controls drain time

  • Backing open area and construction.
  • Infill type, depth, and compaction level.
  • Base design: open-graded stone, thickness, and geotextile separation.
  • Subgrade soil infiltration and any underdrain system.
  • Site slope and how edges, seams, and curbs manage outflow.
  • Rainfall intensity and duration.
  • Debris, organics, and fine sediment that can restrict flow over time.

Choose fully permeable when

  • Your climate sees frequent or heavy rain.
  • The site is flat or includes low spots you need to keep dry.
  • Pet areas need fast flush-through and quick dry times.
  • High-traffic sports, play, or commercial spaces demand minimal puddling.

Choose perforated when

  • Budget is tight and the area is small or well sloped.
  • You already have relief drains or daylight outlets close by.
  • The use case is decorative or low-traffic with minimal storm intensity.

Design checklist for fast drainage

  • Assess soil infiltration. If native soils are slow, plan an underdrain or thicker open-graded base.
  • Target 1 to 2 percent surface slope where possible.
  • Use clean, open-graded aggregate for the base. Avoid fines that trap water.
  • Install geotextile to separate soil from stone and reduce clogging.
  • Detail edges to let water out. Avoid creating perimeter dams.
  • Pick infills that maintain void space and resist compaction.
  • Plan an outlet path to daylight, drain tile, or a sump where allowed.

Installation specs that matter

  • Base thickness scales with rainfall, soil, and loading. Increase depth or add drains for slow soils.
  • Compact in lifts while keeping the base open graded. Do not crush the voids.
  • Stagger seams and keep adhesives within seam lines so you do not block water paths.
  • Verify slope and outfalls before turf goes down.

Maintenance for maximum flow

  • Groom fibers and decompact infill on a set schedule for high-use areas.
  • Vacuum or brush off leaves and fines before they settle.
  • Use appropriate enzymatic cleaners in pet zones to keep pathways open and odor free.
