Why sand infill matters for indoor putting greens

Sand infill stabilizes the turf fibers, flattens micro undulations, and creates a predictable ball roll. As infill mass increases, fibers stand more upright and friction decreases, which typically produces a faster, truer surface. Too little infill leaves the face soft and slows the roll. Properly set infill also improves consistency across the entire green.

Target speed guide by Stimp and typical ranges

  • Practice pace 8 to 9 Stimp: roughly 0.75 to 1.0 lb per sq ft
  • Standard private indoor 9.5 to 10.5 Stimp: roughly 1.0 to 1.25 lb per sq ft
  • Fast 11 to 12 Stimp: roughly 1.25 to 1.75 lb per sq ft

Actual amounts depend on your turf’s pile height, density, and backing, plus how flat and firm the base is. Always confirm with your turf manufacturer’s spec sheet, then fine tune on site.

Key factors that change how much infill you need

Turf construction

  • Pile height and fiber denier: shorter, denser putting fibers usually need less total mass than taller fibers.
  • Backing stiffness: stiffer backings rely more on surface infill to achieve final speed and trueness.

Base and environment

  • Base flatness and compaction: minor lows will swallow more sand before the green firms up.
  • Indoor climate: humidity swings are smaller indoors, so speed is driven mostly by infill and brushing habits.

Infill characteristics

  • Granule size: 20/40 to 30/50 kiln-dried silica spreads and nests well for putting surfaces.
  • Shape: subrounded to rounded particles reduce interlock and help speed; angular particles lock up and can slow the roll.

Choose the right sand

  • Use clean, kiln-dried silica sand in the 20/40 to 30/50 range for smooth, even filling.
  • Avoid damp play sand or dusty blends that clump and dull speed.
  • Coated or colored sands are optional indoors. They add cost without a big speed benefit for most private greens.

Pro application method

  1. Pre-brush the turf to lift fibers and expose the face.
  2. Measure your area and weigh sand for the first pass. Work in light lifts of about 0.25 lb per sq ft.
  3. Broadcast with a drop spreader or shaker, then power broom or stiff-brush in multiple directions.
  4. Repeat lifts until you approach your target. Keep sand just below the fiber tips for a clean roll.
  5. Roll-test, then micro-adjust by adding or removing small amounts. Brush after every change.

Simple roll testing without a stimpmeter

  • Mark a straight 10-foot lane with tape.
  • Roll 10 balls from the same spot with the same stroke and record the finish distance for each.
  • Average the distances, then compare before and after adjustments. Longer average roll means faster speed.

Bag calculator and examples

Formula: total pounds = area in sq ft × target lb per sq ft. Bags needed = total pounds ÷ bag weight.

  • 100 sq ft at 1.0 lb per sq ft = 100 lb total = 2 bags at 50 lb
  • 200 sq ft at 1.25 lb per sq ft = 250 lb total = 5 bags at 50 lb
  • 300 sq ft at 1.5 lb per sq ft = 450 lb total = 9 bags at 50 lb

Buy one extra bag to allow for dialing and touch-ups.

Maintenance that protects speed

  • Brush weekly to stand fibers and redistribute fines.
  • Spot top-up as lanes develop. Add small amounts, brush, and retest.
  • Vacuum lightly with a hard-floor setting when needed. Do not over-vacuum or you will lift infill.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Overfilling above fiber tips, which can feel crunchy and unpredictable.
  • Skipping brushing between lifts, which hides soft spots.
  • Mixing sand types that settle at different rates.
  • Using damp or contaminated sand that clumps and slows the roll.

When to consider specialty infills

If you need extra acoustic dampening or a touch more cushion around fringe areas, a light blend with elastomeric infill can help. For the main putting surface, clean kiln-dried silica remains the most consistent performer for speed and trueness.
